Background

SRRH is a product of the former Shinyanga District Hospital which was established to provide services to Shinyanga district during the early years of independence and when it was granted regional status, the hospital became Regional Hospital. As years have gone by the hospital has grown not only in size and types of services provided but also in terms of structure and health professionals. It is the largest government owned hospital in the region.

The services of the Hospital have increased over the years to include Reproductive and Child health (RCH) clinic, Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT and PMCT), Care and Treatment Clinics (CTC), and Home Based Care (HBC) supported by Development Partners/Donors in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (MOHCDGEC). The space that accommodates wards, theatres, laboratory, offices for medical officers, administration, secretarial services, pharmacy, physiotherapy and OPD waiting section is overstretched to the extent that it can no longer provide room for expansion. Thus, efforts have been taken to identify an area for possible expansion. As we are drafting this SP, construction works of new SRRH structures at the new site is underway.
